Seat covers or reupholstery: which is right for you?

Car seats wear from every direction: daily driving, sun, spilled coffee, pets and children. A custom seat cover is one way to protect seating or change how an interior looks. In other cases, re-covering the seat itself gives a better and longer-lasting result. Mark's Auto Trim helps drivers in Oshawa and Durham Region work out which route makes sense, then does the work.

  • Seat covers suit seats that are still in decent shape and need protection, or a change of colour or material.
  • Reupholstery is usually the better choice when the surface is torn, seams have split or the seat no longer looks or feels right underneath.

Bring the vehicle in and we will look at the seats with you and give you straightforward advice, including when repair is enough. If the damage is mostly to leather, see our leather car seat repair page.

Materials and finishes

We have access to a wide array of fabrics, including vinyl and leather options, so you can choose a look and feel that suits your vehicle and the way you use it. A few things worth thinking about:

  • Vinyl is generally easy to wipe clean, which suits family vehicles and work use.
  • Leather has a premium look and feel and benefits from occasional cleaning and conditioning.
  • Cloth fabrics tend to be more breathable and can be found in many patterns.
  • Colour and design matter too. Two-tone combinations and contrast stripes can change the character of an interior.

Our guide to leather car seat covers covers some of the questions to ask before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Are seat covers better than reupholstering?

It depends on the condition of your seats. Covers are a good fit for seats that are still sound. If the surface is torn or seams have failed, re-covering the seat is often the better long-term answer. We will tell you which we recommend after seeing them.

Can you work with leather or vinyl?

Yes. We carry vinyl and leather options along with a range of other fabrics. Ask us what is available for your vehicle.

Do you repair seats as well as cover them?

Yes. Seat repairs are part of our work, and for leather damage you can read more on our leather car seat repair page.
